When Kelly Poppinga arrived in Provo for his second stint as a BYU assistant coach, he wasn't shy about wanting to recruit Atlanta. Poppinga had recruited the Atlanta area as an assistant under Bronco Mendenhall at Virginia.
Over the last several months, BYU has started to recruit the state of Georgia more consistently. On Friday, those recruiting efforts paid off when Georgia defensive back Therrian Alexander III committed to the Cougars.
BYU and Utah are in the middle of a two-year hiatus from their heated rivalry. The two will resume play on the gridiron in 2024. Until then, the two programs continue to compete on the recruiting trail.
After coaching at BYU for years under former head coach Bronco Mendenhall, Kelly Poppinga left his alma mater BYU in 2015 and followed Coach Mendenhall to Virginia where he coached from 2016-2021.
